Sherlock Holmes: Tom Conway - Dr. Watson: Nigel Bruce

In the fall of 1946, Basil Rathbone left the radio program and was replaced by Tom Conway, a fine British actor known for playing RKO Picture's The Falcon, with Nigel Bruce continuing his portrayal of Dr. Watson. The series maintained a high level of quality, but for reasons of expense and support, the production was moved to New York less than a year later and new actors were brought in.

Sherlock Holmes: John Stanley - Dr. Watson: Alfred Shirley

In New York, British actors John Stanley and Alfred Shirley were brought on as the detective and the surgeon respectively, with Stanley's Holmes a bit harsher than previous radio renditions. With dwindling listenership due largely to the growing popularity of television, the production under these actors lasted nine months.

Sherlock Holmes: Sir John Gielgud - Dr. Watson: Sir Ralph Richardson

With the BBC in London, the roles of Holmes and Watson were assumed by Shakespearean actors Sir John Gielgud and Sir Ralph Richardson (pictured here with Gielgud as Holmes on the right). Orson Wells was originally offered the role of Holmes, but was unable to commit. He did, however play the role of Professor Moriarty in The Final Problem. Their portrayals were impeccable and highly regarded.
